5 Tips for Choosing a Domain Name
Tuesday, August 12th, 2008The first question that comes up when starting a new website is “what will I call it?”. Here are some quick tips when deciding on a domain name to register:
- Keep it short. Try to limit your domain name to a combination of two or three short words, and try not to go too far over 20 characters total.
- Check your spelling.
- Rhyming make it memorable
- Try to get a .com.
- Don’t fear the dash.
People will have a harder time remembering or typing in the name of your site if it is mispelled.
Some conventions that make poetry sound nice also work for domain names. Try combining two words that start with the same letter (like Pinch Penny) or that use similar sounds. Say the name outloud to see if it rolls pleasantly off the tongue.
The “dot com” has become the defacto standard domain extention on the internet, and is the most easy to remember for any person typing in yoru domain name.
Some people may recommend you stay away from a dash in your domain name, but if used sparingly they can work well. Often a two-word domain name is unavailable without a dash, so adding a dash is a better choice than going with a longer name. Also, most search engines read the words between dashes better than they read onebigjumbledomainname, so you could even get better placement in a search engine with a dash in your domain name.
